Sourdough Bread Myths That Might Surprise You

Sourdough Myths Busted: Separating Fact from Fiction
Sourdough is more than just trendy toast—it’s a nutritional powerhouse with a history rooted in tradition and science. Yet, despite its growing popularity, there’s still a lot of misinformation floating around about what sourdough really is and why it’s different from conventional bread.
Let’s break down the most common myths and uncover the truth about sourdough, so you can feel confident saying “yes” the next time it’s an option on the menu!
Myth #1: Sourdough is just regular bread with a fancy name.
Truth: Sourdough is made with a live fermented culture (starter), not commercial yeast. This natural fermentation process helps break down gluten, increases nutrient availability, and gives sourdough its signature tang and chewy texture.
Myth #2: It’s too hard to make at home.
Truth: While sourdough takes time and care, it’s absolutely learnable—especially with the right guidance. Many beginners find it relaxing and rewarding once they understand the basics (and I happen to teach those basics in my workshops 😉).
Myth #3: Sourdough isn’t any healthier than white bread.
Truth: Fermentation is the game-changer. Sourdough has a lower glycemic index, is often easier to digest, and is packed with beneficial bacteria and acids that enhance gut health.
Myth #4: You have to eat it fresh or it’s bad.
Truth: Sourdough keeps longer than commercial bread thanks to its natural acids. It also freezes beautifully. Many of my clients bake in batches and store loaves for weeks!
Why Sourdough Matters
When you understand the science and tradition behind sourdough, you realize it’s not just a food—it’s a lifestyle choice rooted in better health, simplicity, and intention. It’s why I bake it for my own family, and it’s why I love teaching others how to do the same.
